I created this handcrafted 11 inch basswood bucket using the tools of coopering. It is made of basswood staves (the side pieces) and a basswood bottom. Basswood comes from the linden tree. The handle is made of 100% Romanian hemp and is durable and mold resistant while maintaining a softer texture than most types of rope.
This bucket is sealed with linseed oil which is safe and natural as it comes from boiling flax seed.
Each stave is made from wood shaped from pieces of basswood that are cut to rough size and shaped using draw knives, spoke shaves, and a coopers plane to reach the proper shape and angle to create watertight seals when bound together with hoops. The bottom of basswood is cut to the exact size to fit the groove (croze) cut in the bottom of the bucket providing a multi-point seal as well as stability.
The hoops are hand splayed on an anvil to provide the needed taper to fit the angle of the bucket, allowing for pressure to hold the staves in place and keep the bucket watertight over extended use. The each hoop is held together with two cold rivets.
